Development Activities

The Southwark Cathedral Development Trust is an independent charitable trust (registered charity number 1069914). Its charitable objects are to fund outreach and mission work in the Parish and wider diocese of Southwark, and it is currently seeking to achieve this through fundraising for the Cathedral Choirs, to meet the costs of repair, renovation and refurbishment of the Cathedral Church, and to restore the church of All Hallows as a place of spiritual nourishment for the community.

The Development Team at Southwark Cathedral is formed of Rose Harding, Development Director, and Alice Willington, Development Officer. The team began work in November 2013, working for the Cathedral’s three fundraising priorities of music, cathedral fabric, and mission: a wonderful challenge as the beauty of the building, the excellence of the musicians, and the Cathedral’s mission of showing the love of God to all through its outward focus, are all causes which speak for themselves.

In the last two and a half years, there have been notable successes, including two grants from the First World War Centenary Cathedral Fabric Repair Fund; over £44,000 raised for the Girls’ Choir under the leadership of Dame Mary Archer; and three new Choristerships for the Boys’ Choir, including the Saddlers’ Chorister and two Morden College Choristers. In addition, in September 2015, the Trust was privileged, with the aid of senior volunteers, to able to host a dinner at Mansion House for 250 guests, which raised £110,000 for various cathedral fabric projects, including step-free access to the Harvard Chapel and the East End of the Cathedral, the TC Lewis organ, and the bells.
