The City of London Sinfonia are taking their first steps in performing to a live audience indoors for the first time since March with two performances of Bach’s 'Goldberg Variations' at Southwark Cathedral on Friday 18 September.

The Goldberg Variations is thought to be Bach’s most numerical composition, in which he used mathematical structures and patterns to expand the many themes he created into 30 Variations. Our hour-long concerts will feature a version for string trio, performed by Alexandra Wood (Leader), Ruth Gibson (Sub-Principal Viola) and Joely Koos (Co-Principal Cello).

The performances (2pm and 7.15pm) will be presented in our usual seriously informal style. Audience members will be able to roam around the Cathedral and experience the music in varying acoustics around the Gothic and Romanesque building, and pre-booked bubbles of chairs will also be available in the Nave. Safety measures, such as social distancing and wearing masks, will be put into place for everyone's safety. Tickets must be booked in advance.

These concerts will be recorded by Apple and Biscuit Recordings and an edited version will be broadcast on our YouTube and Facebook channels at a later date.
